In-Home Newborn Photography – Why You Should Consider This Option

Newborn Photography Session At Home - Why You Should Consider This As An Option

All you want to do is soak up every single moment with your precious wee bundle. You’ve toyed with the idea of a professional photo session but the thought of leaving the house is way at the back of your mind.  All those things you need to take with you, your baby might be unsettled and need feeding, the sleep routine might be all messed up… Yep, I’ve had those thoughts too!

What if the session could take place in your own home? An in-home newborn photography session is the perfect option for those of you that are still wrapped up in your hazy new baby bubble!

Why choose an In-Home Newborn Photography Session?

An in-home newborn photography session has so many benefits  – the main one being that you don’t have to leave that cosy wee family bliss that you are enjoying.

The photographer comes to you. The session is entirely baby-led. Parents old and new can totally understand how unpredictable babies can be! Your new arrival is happy in a space that is familiar to them and can take a nap, or an hour-long feed if they need to, and parents can relish all those new baby cuddles they’ve been craving.

Beautiful, natural memories

Photographs are so important for preserving memories. They instantly transport you back to that moment – the smells, the laughter, the emotions…

Newborn photographs take you back to those early days of amazement at this tiny human that you brought into the world. They remind you of the feeling that your heart could burst as it’s so full of love.

There are no props or fancy costumes used, as it’s important to focus on those real-life memories that you are living every day. Newborn photographs at home will have authentic memories in each and every one that will be so valuable to you as a family.

Search Google and you’ll be presented with lots of beautifully posed newborn images. You know, the ones where they are propped up in a bucket, or leaning on their hands? It’s important to note that, while these are lovely to look at, these images are composite photographs (made up of more than one shot and a lot of work behind the scenes!) and the photographers are fully trained for carrying out this type of photography safely.

Newborn photography at home is a much more relaxed affair. There is no panicking about hands being placed in the wrong position, or the need for a “spotter” to ensure that the baby is not injured during the session. It’s all about those beautiful, natural images that tell your family’s story as it happens.

Siblings Can be Included Too

All of sudden, this new little person is taking up a lot of attention and older siblings may be feeling a little left out.

Newborn photographs at home mean that older children feel happy and safe in familiar surroundings and can be included in the pictures if they want, or they can retreat to their own space if they feel they need to. Big brother or sister can be the tickle monster, or give cuddles to their new sibling. Whatever they are comfortable with.

It’s also great to take the session outside for a bit so that older children can let their personalities shine.

How to Prepare for an In-Home Newborn Session

You’re worrying that your home is not tidy enough, right?

It’s the photographers job to search for the best light and nice angles for the perfect shot. Your home does not need to be pristine but it does help to remove items from sofas, beds, kitchen surfaces etc if you don’t want them in shot. A home is for living in so don’t go overboard! Remember that these images are a reflection of your real-life, not an insta-perfect movie set! Same goes for your clothing choices. Wear what you are comfortable in but maybe avoid bright colours and flashy logos if you want your images to have that timeless feel.

All you need to worry about is enjoying time with your new arrival.

If you would like a special blanket, or teddy, or anything else included in the images, it’s a good idea to let your photographer know beforehand.

No Stress

An in-home newborn session is designed to take away the time pressures and stress of a traditional studio session. The focus is your newborn and your family. So just sit back, snuggle your new baby, and enjoy your day. Let the photographer do the rest!

Our Crazy and Beautiful Life – January 365 Project

“You’re mad. Bonkers. Off your head…but I’ll tell you a secret…all of the best people are!”

ALICE IN WONDERLAND

This year I have decided to document our family life in a 365 project, every crazy and beautiful moment captured in a photo a day for a whole year. Our story, honest and true.

Here is January!

No-stress Solution to Getting Family Photos You Love

Stress-free family photoshoots exist! Really!

But HOW? I hear you ask. Family photography usually means having the kids stand/sit and pose and my kids will not do that!

Let me tell you a secret… You most definitely do not have to sit and pose for a great family photo. No, no – those are BORING! Trust me, the photos you will actually LOVE the most, are the ones that are truly candid and natural.

Your family having FUN – just how it should be.

No worrying about co-ordinated outfits, or if the children will be on their best behaviour

Children are not robots. Yeah, some photographers are good at getting children to sit in their pristine outfits and all looking towards the camera and smiling. But let’s face it, the images all look the same year in, year out – except the kids have grown a wee bit.

The best family photos are the ones that really tell your story in an authentic way.

My photography sessions are a completely stress-free experience. There will be no bribing children to sit nicely and stay still. I actually love it more when they run wild and free! Children by nature are happiest when they are allowed to roam about and explore. Why do I know this?

I’m a parent, just like you

I am also not just a photographer! Yep, in my spare time, I lose hours to Pinterest, looking for new activities to do with our local toddler group – putting my Early Years education training to good use! I’m also such a big kid at heart – so I have a great rapport with children and I can make them laugh to bring out a wee smile for the camera if they are feeling a bit shy.

But I hate being in front of the camera.

I hear ya. This is something that most of the parents I work with will say to me at the start of the photoshoot. I’m the same! It will take a lot of bribery for me to step out from behind the lens! Trust me though, you will LOVE the photos of you and your children. I hang back and capture the in-between moments – the ones that would be missed in “normal” family portrait session.

Cheryl is quite simply a genius! I booked her for photos of my daughter. She ended up getting a couple of us together. Very natural candid pics that I love. Me being someone that hates having a photo taken and hates photos that I am in. She does a great job of putting you at ease and just snaps away as she goes.

Why You Should Print Your Photos

One of my absolute favourite memories as a child is sitting down with my Granny and trawling through family photo albums. You know, the leather bound ones with the plastic film lining, filled with hundreds of family snaps from years gone by.

We would flick through each one, stopping to have a laugh about the dubious choice of clothing, or reminiscing about how small my cousins were, or how much the house and garden had changed over the years. Everyday moments that mean nothing to others but for me, moments that tell the story of my childhood.

My older sister and I on our first day at school – I think I was a little excited!

The phrase “Time sure does fly” springs to mind when I look at how much my two boys have grown over the last couple of years and I realise that my passion for photography stems from wanting to hold on to precious moments with them as long as I can. I don’t want to forget any of the details of their childhood. I am currently planning a photo album for each of my boys to look back on when they are 18 so they can reminisce just like I did!

Sadly though, a lot of us snap hundreds, if not thousands of photos every day and have them sitting in limbo on their phone or computer, forgotten about except those chosen few that are shared on social media or shown to the family on the odd occasion you scroll through your photo gallery. Printing photos to be stored in albums has become a thing of the past as we whizz forward into the technological era. The years are also whizzing by though, so a gentle reminder for you all… print those photos! Why? Well here are my 3 reasons!

1) CDs are slowly becoming a thing of the past so the same may be said for USB drives in a couple of years!

All these digital ways of storing your images are great and don’t get me wrong, I use them too! BUT, will they be around forever? Just look at what is happening to CDs – how many of us actually own a CD these days? The majority of us now have our music on streaming devices and the like. Technology changes at the drop of a hat so please don’t think that Facebook, Instagram, Dropbox etc will be around forever. Back up all those photos you have on the web but also make sure you have a physical copy of each one that you want to cherish so they can be looked at and enjoyed for a lifetime.

A couple of years ago I had a devastating experience. All but a handful of photos of my youngest son as a baby were stored on my laptop. One day, that laptop decided that it would no longer switch on and it was later discovered that the hard drive was corrupted. Was the hard drive backed up anywhere? No. All those photos of him from newborn to 4 months old – gone. I am so grateful that I had some photos printed and I also have some photos from a newborn session and cake smash displayed on my living room wall. Those personal images on the laptop though, I’ll never see them again. Don’t be like me!

2) An album truly stands the test of time.

Remember those photo albums I was talking about? They are still around over 30 years later for my sons to flick through. I can even pick out some images to embarrass my sisters (only joking, I’m not that mean, honestly! )

An album can also be passed on to family members someday. What would you rather receive as a family heirloom – a USB drive or an album you can treasure and pass on from generation to generation?

3) Your children will appreciate them someday

And with that, I’m back to where I started. Looking back in time and relishing the moments spent with members of your family is utterly amazing. To be able to relive that moment one more time is priceless.

The image at the top of this post is a collection of old photos I recently had a look through at my grandparent’s old house. Some of them may be photos from well before I was even born but just by looking at them, I’m there with my granny again one more time and that to me is everything.

I want my children to look back on photos of their childhood and also to know their heritage and one day they’ll be flicking through the albums with their children and grandchildren and they will be so grateful that I chose to print those special memories for them as my parents and grandparents did before me.

Send me an email and let’s chat about how I can capture memories to be cherished for years to come.

Beach Days! Live for the moment!

The waves are crashing on the beach, the sun is shining, the kids are running about and enjoying life! My family photography sessions are all about having fun, being carefree and escaping the rat race for while and what better place to do that than the beach! Aberdeenshire and Moray have some of the most beautiful beaches in Scotland and here are just a few of my favourites…

There are many more though! Head out and explore!

The beach is a natural playground -rockpools are hiding an abundance of sealife for children to explore. Take a bucket and collect shells or build a sandcastle. Have a contest – who can make the biggest castle!

Get lost in the moment! If I’m feeling stressed, or everything is becoming a bit overwhelming, a walk on the beach is the perfect medicine. I can totally get lost in my own thoughts and let the waves wash all my worries away. The sound of the water is so calming and it’s so easy to just relax for a while.

Have a laugh with your family! Take away the gadgets and put down the phones and enjoy being with your loved ones. One of may favourite quotes is “Children can’t bounce off the walls if you take the walls away” and it’s so true! If we take away the toys and gadgets and just let children be themselves outdoors, then those are some of the best moments that will be remembered for a lifetime.

Love and Laughter – Family Documentary Photography Session, Loch Morlich Highlands

My family photography sessions are all about having fun. I try to blend into the background as much as possible, allowing you to completely relax and be yourselves. That’s when the real, candid, natural moments happen and those make for the most beautiful images.

Wow what a beautiful place this was! A stunning freshwater beach, sunshine and beautiful company too!

I don’t usually travel up to the Highlands for a family photography session but if a location means something special to a client, I’m there!

I can see why this place is so special to this family! The views at Loch Morlich were absolutely breathtaking.

I was so honoured to be invited to photograph the outing, capturing precious memories for Zoe, Neve and Struan.

Climbing trees and grubby knees! – Family Photography, Aberdeenshire

These guys were lots of fun! We met at a local pond, surrounded by woodland bathed in glorious sunshine and the first thing the boys were drawn to were the trees – inviting them to climb and explore!

My photography sessions are all about having fun and making memories, rather than being told where to stand and to smile at the camera. I capture real moments, candid memories, the real you.

Little sister was very curious and wasn’t too sure of the camera to begin with but a cuddle and some giggles with big brother brought out some lovely smiles!

The boys had great fun finding new trees to climb and a contest was had to see who could find and carry the biggest branch. And of course, no walk alongside water is complete without a game of pooh sticks! Then came the hill rolling. Isn’t that just the greatest feeling? The exhilaration of tumbling down a hill and trying to beat your sibling to the bottom. Great fun!

So much love and laughter in this family!
